TEAMS
Challenge teams include both designers and operators. Entrants can apply individually or as a team.
Once all qualifying design applicants are organized into teams, the Design Exchange begins.
Upon receiving the Mission requirements, teams undertake to design a designated sub-system for a proven aircraft platform. In 2022, this will be propulsion and landing gear for a hydrogen-filled buoyant lift mobile aerostat. Every year, the Challenge grows in complexity with teams from the prior year informing the next Mission.
Guided by veteran experts in hydrogen and airship design and manufacturing, all Design Exchange teams produce designs that will be tested in a simulated computer environment. If they pass this stage, qualifying designs will proceed to manufacturing in the build phase. There is no competition during the build phase. Design Teams will gain exposure to the manufacturing process, as Solar Ship builds the airship fabric structures and oversees sub-system build for safety.
Motivated Design Team members with build capabilities are encouraged to participate directly in the build stage as Interns.
Design Teams with piloting and operating capabilities are tested to ensure minimum safety and competence for operations. Teams without piloting and operating capabilities are matched with Operators.
